When you slow down and take time to figure out what your body is telling you, you’ll figure out pretty quickly that your body is often just as smart as your brain. To be the healthiest and strongest version of yourself, you need your mind and body to be working together. The mind-body connection is a powerful thing. So how can you strengthen this connection?

Here’s How to Strengthen Your Mind-Body Connection

Live in the present.

When you live in the now, you stop worrying about the past or future. You don’t get as wrapped up in things you can’t control. Decision making becomes simpler and clearer. A clearer mind enables you to listen to your body or gut more often. Meditation, mindfulness and yoga can help strengthen your body-mind connection by bringing you into the current state of things.

Breathe better.

Clearing your mind and reducing your stress through proper breathing can strengthen your mind-body connection. A lot of people ask me how they should breathe, both when exercising and when living their everyday lives. It’s a good topic to educate yourself on because so many of us are not breathing properly. The shallow puffs of air most of us breathe don’t give us near enough oxygen to maximize our body’s performance. I’ve found the best form of breathing to be belly breathing. It’s easy! Here’s how to belly breath:

Concentrate and stay focussed.

When you workout, if you focus your mind on where you should be feeling the exercise, you’ll feel it more, and end up getting better results. This is why I always recommend that my clients put down their phones or magazines when they workout. I tell them to visualize the muscles they should be feeling work in each move and make sure that those muscles are activated during each rep. This is especially important when you’re trying out a new exercise move or format. If your body tells you that something doesn’t feel right, chances are, your form is probably incorrect. Performing an exercise incorrectly, is when you can end up doing more damage than good for your body. Enlist the help of a fitness professional if this happens to you.
