What’s the Big Deal About Skipping Breakfast?

Studies show that if you skip this first meal of the day, you are more likely to choose high-calorie foods later for lunch and dinner. You’ll often consume more in the mid and late day because you feel hungrier when breakfast is skipped.

Not only that, but when breakfast isn’t eaten within one-two hours of waking up, your body begins to attack your muscles for fuel. Blood sugar drops and adrenalin and cortisol increase. You begin to crave processed foods because they offer you the quick energy your body feels it needs.

If you still have to be convinced to eat breakfast, think about this. Our metabolism slows down while sleeping to conserve energy and it speeds up as soon as we wake up. The first half of day is when our digestion is more efficient, so skipping breakfast doesn’t make sense.

Hopefully you now understand why you need to eat breakfast. Now I’ll answer the next question on your mind…

What are the Best Breakfast Foods to Eat?

Don’t be afraid to eat a big breakfast. This meal will prepare you for the day and help prevent a grumbling stomach before before lunch. Breakfast should be a balance of proteins, carbs and fats; with limited sugar.

  • Foods filled with healthy fats and protein such as nuts, seeds, eggs, Greek yogurt, nut butters and avocados are good selections. They keep you feeling fuller for longer, help curb cravings and add great taste.
  • Foods high in fiber including steel cut oats, beans, legumes, fruits and vegetables will keep your digestive system working properly and they will help keep you feeling full for longer.
  • Limit sugar filled foods like many breakfast cereals and bars. When you consume a lot of sugar for breakfast, you’ll feel hungry again within an hour or two. These foods spike your blood sugar levels right after you eat them, but your blood sugar will drop quickly thereafter. The energy boost you feel is short-lived and you will be hungry within an hour of eating sugary foods.
Breakfast

A healthy breakfast is key to starting your day off right.

Here are some of my favourite breakfasts, based on what I’ve highlighted above…

3 Healthy Breakfast Ideas

1. I personally love my vegetable filled protein shake that I consume at least five days a week. See the video below to learn how I make my shakes in less than 3 minutes.
2. Veggie filled omelettes are great, remember to go heavy on the vegetables. I love putting onions, tomatoes, spinach, zucchini and peppers in with my eggs.
3. Steel oats with diced apples, berries and even carrots are a tasty and filling breakfast.
